Afcons Infrastructure Ltd has emerged as the lowest bidder and is set to win the contract for the Vadhwan Port's breakwater project with a bid of ₹5,301 crore, marginally exceeding the project's estimated cost of ₹5,111 crore. This project represents a critical element in the development of Vadhvan Port in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, set to become India's largest public port upon completion.
The breakwater construction spans 10.14 km, the longest for any Indian port, and will protect against the harsh wave climates, essential for port operations.
The tender saw fierce competition with bids from major entities like Larsen & Toubro and Archirodon Group, followed by a joint venture involving Cemindia Projects and NMDC Dredging & Marine. Clearance was secured for all participants by the union government before the bid opening.
Vadhvan Port is a joint venture comprising the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (74% stake) and the Maharashtra Maritime Board (26% stake). The port project, valued at ₹76,220 crore, is designed to handle 298 million tonnes of cargo annually, with a significant portion developed through public-private partnerships.
Recent infrastructure deals include the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) awarding J Kumar Infraprojects a ₹2,360 crore contract to build crucial expressway connectivity.
Land acquisition has been crucial, facilitating progress in both road and maritime connectivity, integral for starting large-scale construction activities.
