CMRL Closes Pier Phase as HCC-KEC Shifts to Viaducts

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has closed the pier-construction phase on the 11.3-km ECV-03 package of Corridor-5, casting Pier P814 near Medavakkam-1 Metro Station.

The milestone gives the HCC-KEC Consortium — Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) and KEC International — a cleaner run at the viaduct and station works that now dominate the contract.

The 513th and final pier completes the sub-structure on the Ullagaram-to-Elcot stretch. Work now shifts to:

- U-girder erection
- Station construction
- Remaining viaduct elements

That transition moves the contract's risk from ground-level foundation uncertainty to elevated superstructure logistics.

The Medavakkam constraint

The section between Pier P879 near Medavakkam Koot Road and Pier P868 along Semmozhi Salai is where delivery risk concentrates.

Piers rise to roughly 29 metres to clear the existing Medavakkam Flyover, and Medavakkam-1 and Medavakkam-2 stations sit at the same elevation.

The crossing includes a 57-metre steel girder span on a sharp horizontal curve of about 125 metres radius — geometry that must be erected over live traffic with staged diversions.

That elevation is not free. It drives deeper foundations, taller piers, heavier vertical-transport systems, and longer station construction cycles — a cost driver CMRL and its contractors have absorbed in design, but one that will resurface in finishes, MEP, and systems interfaces.

Who carries what

CMRL controls scope, approvals, and traffic-management coordination. AEON Consortium supervises as general consultant.

HCC-KEC bears execution and coordination risk. The joint venture's girder-launching and precast logistics now become the decisive schedule variables.

For suppliers, the phase shift re-rates demand: precast U-girder casting yards, steel girder fabricators, and eventually station E&M, elevators, and escalators become the active procurement front.

The southern alignment through Medavakkam and Elcot also keeps ridership visibility as a parallel commercial story.

The real signal: Chennai Metro's Corridor-5 has moved past its most unpredictable civil phase. The binding constraint is no longer piling and piers — it is geometry, girder erection over an operating flyover, and the sequencing of elevated stations at 29 metres.
