Salasar Closes ₹170 Crore Assam Hill Electrification

3
min

Salasar Techno Engineering has closed physical execution on the Lumding–Badarpur Hill Section for Northeast Frontier Railway — the 172 route-km, 228 track-km stretch that let the Ministry of Railways declare Assam fully electrified in September 2026. The contract, worth ₹170 crore, was executed for RITES.

Do the arithmetic. That is roughly ₹75 lakh per track kilometre through terrain where masts are anchored into landslide-prone slopes.

The margin sat in foundation design and mast anchoring. Stringing overhead line was the easier half.

A Commissioning Timeline Stretched Over Three Years

The schedule tells a second story.

- May 2023: the 54 TKM Lumding–Langting block cleared safety inspection and loco trials.
- March 2024: Chandranathpur–Badarpur at 51 TKM and Langting–Maibong at 32 TKM were certified.
- Langting and Haflong: two traction substations, plus eight switching stations, followed.
- 30 July and 5 August 2026: the final Electrical Inspector to Government clearances for Bandarkhal and Jatinga Lampur landed.

Electric freight began rolling that month.

For the better part of three years, construction sat ahead of the paperwork.

Statutory clearance and staged commissioning held the corridor.

Risk Allocation and the Cost of the Certification Tail

RITES holds the client interface with Northeast Frontier Railway. Salasar carries construction, commissioning and clearance exposure.

Money moves NFR to RITES to Salasar, so contractor working capital stayed committed through the certification tail while sections of the corridor were already energised and earning.

Managing Director Shashank Agarwal framed the job as a test running from anchoring masts on landslide-prone slopes to securing rigorous safety clearances.

Where the Operational Upside Lands

The operational upside is genuine. Electric traction on the Barak Valley grade removes diesel haulage limits and adds regenerative braking on the descent, lifting freight throughput for Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur.

What Assam's Completion Signals

The signal is uncomfortable. Assam is done.

What remains of the national electrification programme is residual hill and ghat work — thin in volume and heavy in clearance risk.

Salasar is hedged across power transmission and fabricated steel.

Contractors holding single-skill overhead-equipment order books should assume a thinning pipeline and reposition toward Kavach signalling and traction substation retrofits now.
