TVK cancels Thanjavur's Rs 42-crore barrage bridge project

The Thanjavur Bridge Is Cancelled

The Rs 42-crore elevated bridge over the Thenperambur barrage in Thanjavur is gone. The TVK government cancelled the proposal after taking office.

The DMK government had announced it in June 2025, when MK Stalin, then chief minister, met farmers from more than 40 villages at a grievance meeting in Thanjavur.

The Paper Trail and the Protest

The paper trail is short. A petition to Stalin on 16 June 2025 produced an announcement the same day and a verbal assurance that money would follow in the next Budget session.

Then the government changed, and the proposal was cancelled with no published reason.

On Monday, residents of Allur, Varagur, Kallaperambur, Chithraikudi and neighbouring villages protested. Their commute runs an extra 25 km around an accident-prone stretch, where pedestrians still cross the Vettaru, Vadavaru and Jambukaviru canals on a bare pavement.

Options for the State

Options for the state are narrow.

- Re-announce with administrative sanction and a named budget line, which converts a promise into a liability.
- Downgrade scope to a causeway and accept that it disappears in a Cauvery flood.
- Push it into the district road renewal budget, where it competes with resurfacing.
- Or do nothing and keep paying the accident cost.

Contractor Risk and Wider Fallout

For contractors, this file is a filter, not an opportunity. Rs 42 crore is exactly the ticket size district bridge builders chase.

It is also the size that gets announced before hydraulic clearance from the water resources side, before land assembly, before money.

No tender was floated, so no contractor carries a receivable. That is the only clean part of this file.

Treat only what is gazetted with administrative sanction and funded in the budget as pipeline. Everything else is political inventory.

The risk warning runs wider than Thanjavur. As the TVK government works through its predecessor's announcement list, the sub-Rs-100-crore rural connectivity tranche is the softest target in any review: too small to defend politically, too visible to ignore when it dies.

Expect more cancellations of this type, and treat design work done ahead of sanction as sunk cost.
