AAI Re-Awards Vijayawada Terminal, Targets October

Contract Reset and Delivery Timeline

Airports Authority of India (AAI) has reset delivery on the Vijayawada International Airport terminal, re-awarding the construction contract to a new contractor in June and now targeting commissioning by October.

Airport director M. Lakshmi Kantha Reddy framed the timeline at an AP Chambers interaction, a setting that signals the project's pivot from pure aviation infrastructure to a broader industrial logistics agenda.

The mid-stream re-award is the real commercial event. A new terminal with multi-level operations, six aerobridges, escalators and provision for expansion cannot be credibly delivered in a four-month window unless a substantial portion of civil work was already standing.

The execution risk has therefore shifted from structural completion to systems integration, aerobridge commissioning, regulatory clearances and operational readiness.

Commercial and Industrial Activation

That compression matters commercially. Vijayawada currently handles 22 flights and roughly 2,000 passengers a day, with apron capacity for 26 aircraft and international services to Singapore and Sharjah three times weekly.

The demand platform exists; what has been missing is terminal capacity and commercial activation. AAI is effectively front-loading capacity to unlock direct Dubai connectivity and a hub-and-spoke model once the new terminal is operational.

AP Chambers president Potluri Bhaskara Rao made the industrial logic explicit:

- Direct Dubai links for Europe and America transit
- Better intra-Andhra Pradesh timings
- A dedicated cold-storage cargo facility for perishables

Reddy's response — an interim conversion of the existing terminal into cargo handling and a long-term integrated cargo terminal — shows the airport is being repositioned around Andhra Pradesh's perishables and export economy, not just passenger throughput.

Regional Connectivity and Delivery Outlook

Fly91's planned morning Tirupati flights add regional connectivity depth, but the structural signal is broader.

AAI is now managing regional airport expansion as a delivery and activation problem: replace the stalled earlier arrangement, compress the schedule, and layer cargo and international connectivity onto the same asset before inauguration.

Contractors bidding AAI regional terminal work should read the Vijayawada re-award as a statement on enforcement, not an isolated procurement event.
