GPT Infraprojects has emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) for a Rs 483.7 crore bridge package from Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), extending its push into complex railway civil works beyond its traditional concrete sleeper base.
The contract covers Important Bridge No. 544 across the Mahanadi River in Odisha — a 32-span structure with 65.84-metre open-web steel girder spans.
The work sits within the third and fourth line augmentation between Nergundi and Barang under East Coast Railway's Khurda Road Division.
The commercial reality is narrower than the headline suggests. The Rs 483.7 crore figure is GST-inclusive; the pre-tax value is Rs 410 crore.
For a company of GPT Infraprojects' scale, this is still a material order-book event, but revenue recognition and working-capital planning will track the pre-tax number, not the announced figure.
Two structural signals stand out.
First, RVNL is unbundling specialist riverine bridge packages down to mid-tier EPC contractors rather than reserving them for large players. That shifts both opportunity and execution risk — steel fabrication, river hydrology, foundation cycles and monsoon sequencing — onto firms with thinner balance sheets.
Open-web steel girders expose the contractor to steel price volatility unless procurement is locked early.
Second, the group's order flow is compounding: wholly owned subsidiary Alcon Builders and Engineers was recently L1 on a Rs 97.31 crore order and another Rs 72.5 crore job in August.
The pattern points to a deliberate diversification from sleeper manufacturing into delivery-heavy EPC work, which raises revenue visibility but tightens margin and liquidity discipline.
