NHAI's Rajiv Chowk Flyovers Face a 60-Metre Girder Problem

4 min read

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has finalised the alignment for two proposed flyovers at Rajiv Chowk in Gurgaon, directing its consultant to prepare the final detailed project report (DPR). The announcement, made on August 4, 2026, marks a procedural step forward for an interchange that has been under discussion for years at one of the most choked junctions on the Delhi-Gurgaon corridor.

Engineering and Land Challenges

But alignment approval is the easy part. The project now stares at a 60-metre precast girder that must be erected above an existing operational eight-lane NH8 flyover — a double-height structure that will be significantly more expensive to build than a standard grade-separated crossing.

NHAI has opted for a three-span arrangement with two 40-metre spans and a single 60-metre span, rather than a continuous single-span bridge, precisely because constructing over live traffic on NH8 leaves no room for conventional methodology.

The two proposed structures serve distinct movement patterns:

- A dedicated two-lane left-turn flyover with paved shoulders will carry traffic from Delhi towards Sohna Road.
- A second-level three-lane right-turn flyover, rising above the existing NH8 flyover, will handle Sohna-to-Delhi movement. This structure will stretch approximately 1.8 kilometres and must maintain 5.5 metres of vertical clearance for traffic passing underneath.

The engineering complexity is compounded by land acquisition. NHAI requires roughly 3 hectares from government entities — 0.89 hectares from BSNL and 0.83 hectares from Tau Devi Lal Stadium being the largest parcels.

While inter-governmental land transfers tend to face fewer legal obstacles than private acquisition, they are rarely swift. BSNL’s financial distress and the stadium’s public-use status introduce coordination risk that could stretch pre-construction timelines.

Operational Overhaul and Project Outlook

The junction currently operates with an eight-lane flyover on NH8 and a six-lane straight underpass on Sohna Road. Despite a right-turn underpass from Medanta Medicity towards Delhi, vehicles from Sohna Road headed to Delhi still negotiate six conflict points at grade. NHAI’s redesign aims to cut those from six to two — a meaningful operational improvement if executed, but one that hinges entirely on constructing the longer, more complex right-turn flyover across the existing structure.

No contractor has been named yet, and no project cost has been disclosed. The consultant — also unnamed — now carries the burden of translating alignment drawings into a constructible DPR that accounts for the 60-metre span erection over live traffic.

For the eventual EPC contractor, this will not be a routine flyover job. The double-height configuration, precast girder logistics over an operational highway, and constrained urban site will demand specialised expertise in staged construction and traffic management.

The real industry signal here is that NHAI is pushing grade-separated solutions deeper into urban interchanges despite rising construction complexity and cost per kilometre.

As the authority moves beyond greenfield highway expansion into brownfield junction redesign — particularly in dense corridors like Gurgaon — the engineering demands on contractors escalate disproportionately to project value. Firms with proven elevated corridor and interchange experience will have an edge when this eventually goes to bid.
