GMRL Fixes Alignment for Elevated Subhash Chowk Metro Station

Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) has fixed the alignment and access points for the proposed elevated Subhash Chowk Metro station on the Gurugram–Sohna Highway. The entry and exit gates, however, will sit directly in a stretch that has flooded repeatedly during the monsoon.

The station will begin near the Subhash Chowk flyover, run roughly 180 metres and stop about 40 metres before the intersection, in front of Tarun Society in Sector 47.

The gate locations and land requirement are now defined:

- Gate one is planned just before ILD Mall.
- Gate two sits in Sector 38, about 80 metres from Sadar police station.
- Both gates will need about 824 square metres of land from the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA).

The Problem Is the Access, Not the Station

The commercial problem is not the station — it is the access.

During rainfall on 24 August, water reached about 2.5 feet near Sadar police station. In the previous monsoon, around 20 school buses broke down at Subhash Chowk and nearly 400 children were stranded for about four hours.

GMRL has not disclosed its position on waterlogging at the proposed entrances.

GMDA Cites Temporary Accumulation and Ongoing Measures

Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) chief executive P.C. Meena said drainage measures were adequate during the monsoon, that water at Subhash Chowk accumulated only temporarily, and that a permanent solution is being developed, with extra traffic police at key intersections.

That answer places flood mitigation outside the metro contract — a structural gap, because GMDA, HUDA and GMRL are separate delivery silos with no single accountable owner for station-level drainage.

Execution Progress Remains Uneven

U-girders are in place over about 500 metres near the Sector 45 station. Work has slowed across roughly 2.4 km between Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bhardwaj Chowk due to obstacles, and remains limited between Umang Bhardwaj Chowk and Basai, where two foot overbridges are among the constraints.

The contractor picked in August has three years to complete and start operations.

Long-Term Interchange Value Hinges on a Future Corridor

Subhash Chowk also carries long-term upside: it could become an interchange if the proposed Bhondsi-to-railway-station corridor advances. Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation has assigned RITES to prepare that detailed project report.

Until drainage responsibility is contractually fixed at the access gates, GMRL risks inheriting an operational liability at every monsoon — and the value of any future interchange.
